Final Images

The two spaces are clearly divided by the outward texture of the building between the clients of Miranda Kerr and Angela Merkel for the WBAI's firsts meeting. The reason for the highly decorative and powerfully denominating structure is that this building has been constructed not only for the meeting of Merkel and Kerr but to demonstrate the power of the WBAI and their commitment to changing the automotive industries paradigms in the critical issues of pollution and safety.
I like this this angle as it captures almost all the elements of the project (with the exception of the second elevator). The two rings serve real uses as lighting platforms, as well as the symbolic wheels around the structure referring to the changes the structure hopes to achieve as well as the wheels of the automotive industry that the WBIA hopes to achieve it on.

The lighting set up has the second smaller horizontal ring lined with lights around the circular fall through of the building, cascading light into the surrounding building scape. The building itself provides lit spaces for work and conferences.

Additional lights are located on each to the elevators and on very bright direct light to the "tire" table.
The meeting place is located right on the road itself. For the conference, traffic will have to be diverted and people in the valley will be able to experience nature reclaiming the once automotive denominated sound of the valley. After the conference, the table can easily be removed and the elevators lifted to permanently rest in the structure, creating a lasting testament of the WBIA's motives and powerful aspirations.
The roofing of the WBIA bridge is fully transparent from the inside out, allowing the occupants to be completely immersed in the beauty of their natural surroundings. This serves to highlight just what is at stake should changes to the huge pollution emissions of the automotive industry fail to be curbed. It also allows the surrounding "halo" and "ring" structure to cast light into the working spaces.

I used the "golden hubs tire" design for the table. It stands as a symbol of the often unnecessarily ridiculous excesses of the naturally demanding automotive industry, which only serving to exacerbate the problem.

Further Development

I decided on an "S" shape to bridge the valley as it works around the natural landscape and incorporates the cliffs for a more powerful effect. Hence the building takes dominance over the road, just as the WBIA intends to take power from the automotive body.

Draft Images

For my first attempt I choose this the Yarra valley. With its picturesque surroundings heightening the power of the bridge, consequently the owners, over the landscape.

Secondly I chose this valley in Hollental (viewed from the castle Falkenstein) which with its road, rugged landscape and sheer faces will imbue the building with the sense of power the clients wish to display. Furthermore, since my "mash-up article" focuses on the automotive industry and the power of the individuals who stand against its inseparable problems, of road fatalities (Miranda Kerr) and the catastrophic pollution levels (Angela Merkel), incorporating the road into the design (maybe table in the middle disrupting traffic during the conference) will be interesting to explore. Hence I am going to develop Hollental further, next step to find some nice European pines and hopefully some decent autumn colours.
The theme for my project will be the power of the automotive industry and likewise the power of the people who resist and curb it.

Article Mashup "WBAI promising to cause powerful ripples to Automotive Industry"

Although the first international meeting of “Women for the Betterment of the Automotive Industry” (WBAI) is only in its formative stage, it has already caused a powerful commitment and interest from the rich, famous and powerful female icons of today. Taking inspiration from the powerful female activists of the past including the inspirational and symbol of the indomitable human spirit Helen Keller, this lobby intends to push some major changes into the male dominated world of the auto lobby. Starting with the issue of the German car manufacturing industry— the largest in Europe, home to Volkswagen, BMW, Porsche and the German- American company Daimler Chrysler - pulled out all the stops to try and derail a proposal by the EU environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas to limit CO2 emissions from new cars to 120 grams/ km (the current average is around 160 g/km).The German lobby said jobs would be lost and too much of a burden placed on car makers by the Commission’s target. But Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany brought pressure that opened the door to a qualitative change in action against global warming, she said, and could “help save the world from calamity."

The talks will also encompass the issue of automotive safety and with Miranda Kerr presenting. "I lost a loved one in a car accident and it is something that has shaped the way I appreciate life and how quickly it can be taken away," she said. "Every time we get in the car we are risking our lives but life is for living and I try my best to not live in fear." Her life thereafter became a triumph over crushing adversity and shattering affliction. Through her touching personal loss Kerr hopes to enforce further utilisation of the pedestrian and crash avoidance systems that already exist on top end car models. Thus significantly reducing the human cost that driving inflicts.

Realtime Pics of Building in Environment

Due to the choice of my scientists -Hawking and Darwin - I decided that the island should be an isolated tropical paradise. For Darwin it provides a basis for his studies, the bird life easily accessible and observable from the overhanging step of the building and hub of the building providing a clear and easy to path to the forest where other species will be encountered. For Stephen Hawking the location offers a remoteness that allows peace and tranquility in forming complex mathematical and astronomical ideas. At the same time the tower would be loaded with equipment for stargazing, unpolluted by civilisation's lights in this isolated location.
The paradigm of the amalgamated quote was the necessity of cooperation in human endeavours. As such I wanted the meeting space to be as large and adaptable as possible. To this end, the entire central ground floor block creates this space as well as the attached hub on the right transformed as a meeting space. The concept enabling each scientist to use both or one of the shared spaces depending on need at that time, minimising costs and creates a flexibility of space.

The flat level space also provides a perfect landing platform for helicopters, providing access to the wheelchair bound Stephen Hawking.

Charles Darwin
"In the long history of humankind (and animal kind, too) those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed. "

+

Stephen Hawking
"We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.

Mine
We are just an advanced breed of monkey, part of the animal kind. Our planet is unspectacular, as is our star. Yet when we cooperate we can even understand marvels as complex as the universe, and that makes us something very special.

Slide from Black Box

I chose this slide due to its potent use of shadows. They create a sinister effect in the first image, and an almost comical one in the second. I tried to integrate the use of complex shadows in my own building with the placement of six lights ( three discrete and three non-discrete) as well as the rising sun. Hopefully achieving the intended feeling of enlightening, and that of a new dawn with new ideas for both the resident scientists.
